In this depiction of the well-known theme of Susanna and the Elders, Susanna reacts to the advances of the two old men by grabbing one of them by the beard.
Gian Giacomo Sementi (1583 - 1636) was an Italian painter born in Bologna and also known as Giovanni Giacomo Semenza. He was a pupil of the painter Denis Calvaert (1540 - 1619), a Flemish by origin, who worked for many years in Bologna, where he had his own school. Sementi also studied with Guido Reni (1575-1642), who himself studied with Calvert from the age of nine. Sementi was one of the very few Bolognese artists to whom Giovanni Baglione dedicated a biography, recalling the success he had among Roman collectors.
